Women’s Grant

Extensions to existing studies: Intended to feature extensions to existing experimental research designs that might yield results of central relevance to the initiative’s research agenda.

Researchers often lack the funding for accommodating the required sample size that might allow decomposing the mechanisms mediating the impacts of interventions, particularly in randomized control trials (RCTs) for impact evaluations.

Women’s Economic Empowerment

Alternatively, researchers might not have the budget to effectively include sufficiently large strata of girls in an experimental sample, particularly in cases where women are less represented than men.

This tier of funding will enable researchers to feature additional intervention arms, female strata to samples and/or other extensions to existing study designs, enabling researchers to research mechanisms influencing women’s economic empowerment.

This tier of the award is predicted to yield results more quickly than funding for brand spanking new projects. As such, funding is going to be awarded to proposals that clearly specialize in adding survey rounds or samples to current studies or adding a Women’s Economic Empowerment and Digital Finance Research Grant targeted treatment arm to an existing study.

The Max award amount for this grant type is USD 200,000.

Measurement experiments:

Intended to support measurement experiments in field surveys. Effectively measuring indicators like (digital) financial inclusion and women’s economic empowerment are crucial for estimating important outcomes like financial health, female agency and empowerment, intra-household bargaining power, control of household decision-making, etc.

The Max award amount for this sort of grant is USD 50,000.

Qualitative methods as extensions to existing studies: Intended to “top-up” existing projects to encourage the inclusion of talented sociologists, anthropologists, and other social scientists who employ qualitative research methods, like ethnography, within the research team to advance high-quality, mixed-method research.

This funding category is motivated by the popularity that rigorously investigated qualitative narratives about how and why interventions impact their subjects is important but often omitted.

This omission largely reflects the differing publication incentives for experts in quantitative methods, like randomized control trials (RCTs), from disciplines like economics and experts in qualitative methods, like ethnography, from disciplines like anthropology, sociology, and gender studies. It should be noted that a standalone qualitative study isn’t eligible for this funding category.

The Max award amount for this sort of grant is USD 50,000.

Pilot Studies:

Accelerating pilot studies early within the Initiative will aid in building a strong pipeline for giant and medium-scale research projects. This tier of funding will support data acquisition and analysis of natural experiments where projects are according to the research agenda.
